A recent report on a young parent support service in Christchurch has found it delivers $4 in social value for each dollar invested.

The report was commissioned by Rātā Foundation, evaluating the programmes and services offered by the Young Parents Development Service at St John of God Waipuna.

The service supports young parents with a range of wrap-around services such as individual social work, and pregnancy and parenting education services.

General Manager of Community, Youth and Child Services, Kath Prins, said “Rātā Foundation funding for St John of God Waipuna continues to be a critical investment in the people and communities we support. Our success is underpinned by our capacity to engage in sector collaborations and coordination that improves outcomes for vulnerable young people in Canterbury.“

“The ImpactLab report helped underline the vitality of supporting young parents, and the strong value represented in support during the early years of child development. In confirming the most effective programmes for child and maternal development, the report will guide how we grow and shape our future support for young parents.”

Danielle Marra, Clinician for the Young Parent Development Team, said “We are very thankful to the Rātā Foundation and Impact Lab for making this research opportunity available to us. The Good Measure Report has quantified some of the lifelong impacts of the work we do with the young parent community.”

“The evidence is clear of the social change that is possible in the early years and we see every day the out-workings of the commitment young parents have to positive change within their families. We will use this research to guide us in extending the work we do to best meet the needs of these precious families that we get to work alongside.”

The evaluation of the Young Parents Service will be utilised in shaping services towards outcomes that contribute to lasting and valuable long-term change. St John of God Waipuna Is adopting learnings from the report into its quality assurance framework and in its engagement with programme funders.
